Privacy Policy
Effective 6 September 2026
Noir is a dating and community app for Black adults. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate, because a policy nobody reads protects nobody.
Noir is operated by [LEGAL ENTITY NAME] ("Noir," "we," "us").
Information you give us
Account. Your email address and password, handled by our authentication provider, Supabase. Your date of birth — Noir is 18+, and this is enforced at the database level, not just in the app. Your date of birth and display name are locked once your profile is created.
Phone number. If you choose to verify a phone number, we store that number and whether it has been verified. Verification codes are delivered by SMS through Twilio. Your phone number is never shown on your profile and is never visible to other members.
Profile. Your name, gender, who you want to see, a bio, and photos or videos. Depending on what you fill in, this can also include height, hometown, ethnicity, work, job title, school, education level, religious beliefs, political views, languages, dating intentions, relationship type, pronouns, sexuality, pets, family plans, and habits around drinking, smoking, marijuana, and other drugs. Some are required to finish setting up your profile; most are optional and have per-field visibility controls in Settings.
What you write and send. Your written prompt answers, direct messages, community-room posts, and any reports or appeals you submit.
Verification selfie. If you request a verified badge, you take a selfie in an assigned pose. It is reviewed by a person on our team and stored privately. It is never shown on your profile.
Sensitive information
Some profile fields — ethnicity, religious beliefs, political views, sexuality, and substance-use habits — are sensitive personal characteristics under privacy law in many places. We ask for them because they are central to how people connect on a dating app built around shared community and values, and they appear on your profile like any other field, subject to your visibility settings. By completing your profile you are choosing to share this with us and, according to those settings, with other members.
Information we collect automatically
Approximate location, if you grant permission. We use it only to show rounded distance between members. We round to the nearest mile and never share your exact coordinates with anyone, ever. You can revoke location access in your device settings at any time; distance features will stop working.
Crash and stability diagnostics, through Sentry. This includes a user identifier, device model, operating system version, app version, and technical crash details. We have deliberately configured Sentry to strip network request details before they leave your device, specifically so that sensitive profile fields and anonymous-room activity cannot be exposed through crash reports.
A push notification token, if you enable notifications.
We do not collect your IP address, advertising identifiers, or connection metadata, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Who we share information with
We share only what each provider needs to do its job.
| Provider | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Your account, profile, messages, and media | Database, authentication, and file storage |
| Twilio | Your phone number and a verification code | Sending SMS verification |
| AWS Rekognition | Photos and video frames you upload | Automated screening for explicit or violent content, before anyone can see them |
| OpenAI | Your public profile text and community-room message text | Automated screening for content that may violate our Community Guidelines |
| Sentry | A user identifier and crash diagnostics | Crash reporting and app stability |
| Expo | Your push notification token | Delivering notifications you enabled |
| Giphy | Your GIF search terms | Only if you use GIFs in chat |
We also share what you choose to make visible on your profile with other members.
We may disclose information where required by law, to protect the safety of our community, to investigate violations of our Community Guidelines, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not use your information to build advertising profiles.
How content moderation works
Two different systems, and the difference matters.
Photos and videos are screened automatically, and can be blocked automatically. Every image and video frame you upload is scanned by AWS Rekognition before anyone else can see it. Content identified as explicit or violent is rejected at upload. This is deterministic and there is no way to opt out, because it protects everyone.
Text is screened by AI, but AI never punishes anyone. Your public profile text and community-room messages may be sent to OpenAI’s moderation systems. If something looks like it may break our Community Guidelines, the system does one thing only: it recommends that a human moderator take a look. It cannot warn, suspend, ban, restrict, or hide you. Every action taken against an account on Noir is taken by a person, who is recorded as the one who took it. This is a deliberate design choice, not a temporary limitation.
Location
If you allow location access, we use it only to calculate a rounded distance in miles shown on profiles — never your exact address or coordinates, and never shared with another member. Turning it off in device settings may limit distance-based features.
How we protect your information
Encryption in transit. Database-level access controls and row-level security policies that restrict every query to the data the requesting account is entitled to. Private storage for profile photos, videos, and verification selfies — served only through short-lived signed links. Crash reporting configured to strip sensitive request data before it leaves your device.
No system is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and to respond quickly when something goes wrong.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete account. This permanently removes your profile, photos and videos, matches, messages, and room posts. It cannot be undone.
What we keep after deletion, and why. We are specific about this because vague answers here are how apps mislead people.
- Moderation records. Reports, moderation actions, and appeals connected to your account are retained. Deleting an account must not erase a record of serious harm to someone else.
- A one-way hash of your email address and, if you verified one, your phone number — but only if your account was banned or held for a serious violation. These are cryptographic hashes, not readable contact details. They exist for one purpose: to stop a banned account from immediately returning under a new signup. They cannot be reversed into your email or phone number and are never used to contact you or to build a profile of you.
If your account was never sanctioned, no such hash is retained.
Your choices and rights
You can view and correct most of your information directly in Edit Profile and Settings, control which profile fields are visible, manage notification preferences, block or report members, and delete your account entirely.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or object to certain uses of your information. Email privacy@noirblackdating.com and a person will respond.
Children's privacy
Noir is for adults only. You must be 18 or older, and this is enforced at the database level. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that someone under 18 created an account, we will remove it and delete the associated information.
Where your information is stored
Noir’s infrastructure is hosted in the United States. If you use Noir from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed there.
Payments
Noir does not currently offer paid subscriptions and does not process payments. If that changes, this policy will be updated before any purchase is possible.
Changes
We may update this policy as Noir changes. If we make material changes we will notify you in the app before they take effect.
